Magnesium Deficiency could be shortening your life.

There is a huge body of information that links magnesium deficiency to heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, migraine and more. Most Americans get more than enough calcium but a recently issued National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report indicates nearly 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, an essential mineral that is required for the health of living cells and normal function of muscle and heart tissues. Magnesium is found in foods such as dark-green leafy vegetables, whole grains and nuts, but nutrition researchers say the over-processing of foodstuffs and the use of phosphates in cola soft drinks have led to mineral deficiencies, particularly shortages of magnesium. There are some estimates that if magnesium were added to bottled water it would save 150,000 lives a year. That's phenomenal. You can't get that result with any drug.

Dr Baroody, who wrote "Alkalize or Die" does not recommend taking magnesium and calcium together because they both enter the cells through the same doorways. Magnesium is much better absorbed when taken in liquid rather than as a hard pill with food. On the main magnesium information site here there are scientific articles and studies galore pointing to the lack of magnesium as an important factor in almost every disease you can think of. It is so easy and so cheap to add 20 mgs of magnesium to every liter of your drinking water during the day that everyone should try it for a month at least and check for improvements in health. One woman reported having a headache for 2 years, seeing neuro-specialists all over the country and then finally taking magnesium tablets on the advice of a friend. She woke up the next morning without the headache for the first time in 2 years.

"The obsession with calcium in our society appears to be a major contributor to magnesium depletion. High intake of calcium interferes with magnesium absorption. In other words it makes an already existing deficiency worse." Dr Reiss, author of Natural Hormone Balance.

Magnesium is considered the most important mineral in the body because it activates over 300 body processes. Some of these processes are energy production, muscle function, digestion, creation of new cells, bone formation, relaxation of muscles, the functioning of your heart, kidneys, the activation of B vitamins, adrenals, brain and nervous system. Deficiency of magnesium, to any extent, will interfere with any of these processes.

These factors dramatically deplete your body's magnesium storage and make it necessary for greater consumption of magnesium: coffee, sugar, mental stress, alcohol, cola type soda, high sodium diet, tobacco, medical drugs of all types, high perspiration, low thyroid, diabetes, diuretics, chronic pain, a high carbohydrate diet, a high calcium diet.

I just read this on a magnesium site - In the human body magnesium serves many crucial roles and is involved in a quartet of minerals that also serve the same function. The human body needs magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium in the processes of helping to transmit electrical impulses across nerves and muscles, regulation of blood pressure, bone building and more. The electrical impulses generate what is called neuromuscular contraction. If you don't have proper magnesium your muscles will begin to cramp. If you consume these minerals in proper levels you will feel younger, lose weight, and see blood pressure fall. That's interesting - I intuitively combined all the ingredients my body needs.

A couple of ways you can tell if you are low on magnesium, besides high blood pressure, are getting muscle cramps and being unusually crabby and hyper, or forgetful. If your grandkids are telling you to chill out or sweeten up, then it's time for some magnesium.

Magnesium can't be overdosed like calcium. Excess calcium forms bone spurs, kidney stones, joint pain, etc. But you will quickly be able to tell if you are taking too much magnesium. You will get diarrhea. In fact, many health experts say to take enough to bowel tolerance. As your body gets used to it, you can up your dose.

It is hard to find supplements that have just magnesium without calcium as well in your local stores. Angstrom Liquid Magnesium is a good one and you can get it online.

On that magnesium site here it says that magnesium deficiency is the strongest indicator of getting diabetes and that magnesium supplementation can keep your blood sugar at better levels. Yet, here is what I just read in the New York Times, April 30, 2005 -

A diabetes drug derived from a poisonous lizard has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, its developers, Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly, said yesterday.
The drug, called Byetta, will be the first in a new class of drugs to reach the market for Type 2 diabetes, the form that usually occurs in adults. Studies have shown it can help control blood sugar and also help people lose a few pounds. The drawback for patients is that the drug must be injected twice a day and nearly half the people who use it suffer nausea, at least initially.
Analysts have said Byetta could achieve sales of hundreds of millions of dollars a year, or even more than $1 billion. Those sales could propel money-losing Amylin, a biotechnology company in San Diego, to profitability.

Would people really be dumb enough to take that poison instead of a necessary mineral that heals your whole body? Yup, I'd bet there are some that would.
